Avena Sativa for Insomnia

A 1997 abstract from a thesis by Joanne Roohani shows the study of Avena Sativa and its benefits towards helping with insomnia. Ten male subjects underwent a double blind crossover trial where for fourteen days they were administered a placebo and the other fourteen days, an Avena Sativa remedy.  The results showed evidence that Avena Sativa helped decrease fatigue and evening sleepiness and improved the subject’s perception of the quality of their sleep.

A 2014 review on Oat (Avena sativa L.) as a dual-purpose cropshows evidence that oats are rich in calcium which relaxes the nervous system and muscles which in turn promotes a better night’s sleep.  Furthermore, it is suggested that oats have been used to treat insomnia, stress, anxiety, depression and nervous exhaustion.
